I can still remember

The first time I saw you.

Your hair was blonde and curly;

Your eyes were a brilliant blue.

Soon we were both in high school,

And you grew handsome and tall.

You sang in our church's youth choir

And you were a wide receiver in football.

You became a part of my life,

Even though we had never met.

Not ever getting to know you

Is now something that I regret.

During your junior year in high school

You went to a party with your friend.

You watched the NCAA championships

Until the very end.

As you were riding home with someone

Something went wrong.

The driver had just turned 16,

And had not had her license very long.

She was driving too fast,

It was dark and she couldn't see.

When she went to take the turn,

Her car flipped and hit a tree.

When I woke up Wednesday morning,

I got out of bed,

I saw your beautiful face in the newspaper,

Under the words "Two teens dead".
